Just a simple shot of some of the baby bunnies in my back yard.. I think they are only about a few days old, less than a week I would say. When I looked at them 3 days ago they were totally hairless. There were about 5 in the nest.. and I hadn't seen the mother around all day ( ) so i snuck over to take some photos.
I had some little ones in my back yard too but they were all grown up =B I thought I ran them over with the lawn mower and I picked one up at the top to make sure he was not hurt. (don't worry they were old enough to leave the nest. the mom left them to live on their own.) I heard that if you pick up a baby rabbit the mom will abandoned them? is that true? or just for baby birds?
It's true for all mammals that the mother will abandon the babies if touched, from baby cats to fawn to rabbits. Birds however do take back their babies without problems. This is because mammals recognize their babies to a big degree over smell, while birds don't.
I know that if the mom smells that humans have been near the nest she will move all the babies to a new location.. but im not sure if she will abandon them or not :/
Do you have a Facebook? I ask because I as well am in Wisconsin, and am looking to expand my portfolio.
